Firewall iP – HowTo
Firewall iP is a very powerful tool. To make usage easier for you I’ve compiled this short how-to:
1. the popup
A this button shows you the host name. if you tap on it a new view will appear and Firewall iP will try to get the WhoIs-information for that domain.
B This selector will save rules in 3 different modes:
a) the normal mode: the hostname showed in A will be used for the rule
b) *domain: a rule which will effect the domain and all subdomains
c) *.domain: a rule which will effect only subdomain
C pretty self explaining:
please note that the switche C affects all buttons except “Allow/Deny once”
2. the main screen
A puts the main screen in edit mode to add or delete apps. in edit mode the (i) (B) will change to a (+)-sign and you can manually add apps.
B tap on this to get to the about view, which offers some settings
C global Allow/Deny: brings you to the global Allow/Deny lists. Rules in these lists will override app-specific rules.
D app list: here you can change or set settings for your apps.
3. the about view
A This switch enables/disables FiP
B select the popup-theme you prefer most
C here can you enable logging and view the log. if logging is enabled it will fill your memory (not RAM!) pretty fast and will need some additional resources. Keep it disabled if you don’t need it.
D directs you to a help page
E if this switch is enabled all application’s connections will be blocked if you are using GPRS/EDGE/3G (will also override all rules). Very helpful for users who have to pay for each MB.
4. the app view
this page is exactly the same for all apps.
A this switch enables (1) or disables (0) FiP for the specific app. this can be used if an App is having problems with FiP (feel free to email me about issues)
B allows all connectoins
C denies all connections
D if B or C are enabled, this switch will allow the rules set in “Always allow/deny” to take effect.
E if this switch is enabled connection are being blocked while using GPRS/EDGE/3G, but only for this specific app. Very helpful for users who have to pay for every MB
F brings you to the detailed rules for the selected app
5. the detailed rules view
A usually this button is the “Edit” button, but this picture shows the Edit mode where you can delete or edit rules.
B if you tap on this cell a popup will appear where you can enter a hostname
C if the view is in “Edit”-mode you can tap on a hostname and edit it. For example to make an *domain rule out of a normal rule

6. the “add a hostname” popup
Whenever you tap on the cell called “tap here to add a hostname” this popup will appear. Here you can use the *domain or *.domain notation.
as a reminder:
a) *domain: a rule which will effect the domain and all subdomains
for example: *google.com will affect google.com as well as xyz.google.com
b) *.domain: a rule which will effect only subdomain
*.google.com will affect xyz.google.com but not google.com
